Silver coins of a rich history and has been valued over the centuries for more than their obvious worth in terms of precious metal. Silver and Gold have long been valued as rare and beautiful metals. Many times coins of silver were designed not only for barter, but to be aesthetically pleasing.
Some of the first recorded coins are from 650 BC. The silver gold coin was made from a naturally occurring mix of silver and gold called Electrum. Some of the earliest coins made from pure silver and gold are the Dinar and the Dirham. The Dinar was compose of gold and the Dirham of silver and began around the seventh century.
In the United States silver coin as a metal was valued because it was so rare. Consequently it was natural to mint coins from silver. The production of these coins had to stop from 1806 to 1836 due to the scarcity of silver. Once silver was discovered in Nevada, the production of these coins began again.
The constant with coins seems to be that they will change in design and even denominations given enough time. However many artists and designers have left their mark on history on the backs or fronts of collectible coins. Some artists are famed almost exclusively for their depiction of a screaming eagle or their change in the face of Lady Liberty.
There have been many coins of silver and gold which were are have become famous. However a recent coin addition that deserves notice are the silver eagle coins. Although their face value reads one dollar USD they are treasured for more than simple currency. Collectors of the the silver dollar usually find that these silver eagles are necessary to fill out any recent collection.
The search for coins which are pure silver and minted fifty or more years ago may be difficult. A coin collector could end up searching, flea markets, auctions, online advertisements or even the trunk in the attic for that last treasured coin. That special coin could be anything, one from a certain year, one with a particular mint mark or one with a particular flaw or misprint.
Collectors have an entire world and history to choose from when they focus their collection. Some choose to collect mint or proof edition silver coinage. Proof or burnished or even bullion coins are special productions which are often limited in numbers and where they can be obtained. Bullion coins might only be available through the mint or through bullion dealers.
Collectors may choose to collect only silver coinage with a particular mint mark or from a particular era. Some collections can be easily filled out while others may contain rare coins which may not be easily found. The thrill of the hunt is part of the lure for some collectors.
