A Guide To Buying Gold Certificates
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you haven't heard of the idea of gold certificates as an investment option before, allow us to explain. A gold certificate is a piece of paper that is, essentially, what a dollar USED to be back when we were still on the gold standard. This is before inflation, when the paper dollar was tied directly to real gold in the reserve.
The abolishing of the gold standard is, of course, why we have to deal with things like inflation, recession, depression and so on, and that's how gold certificates are inflation-proof.
Okay, so the certificate isn't spendable like the paper dollar, you can't go into a convenience store and buy a can of soda with a gold certificate, but, you do have something on paper that represents REAL value, it represents exactly how much it's worth in gold. In this sense, it's exactly like real gold, and exactly like the paper dollar was before the abolishing of the gold standard.
How do you invest in these certificates? Well, exactly the same you invest in real gold, because that's essentially what it is...
Play it Safe
Gold is the option for safe, smart investors, not for the get rich fast schemers. People who want to become millionaires over night will play the lottery, they'll be suckered into cheap scams, they'll waste all the money the have trying to get rich because they simply don't understand how money works: It takes time to build value. With gold, you take it, you put it somewhere safe, and you forget it until you need it.
Don't Get Greedy
It is POSSIBLE to make money playing the whole buy/sell game with gold, but not as exciting as with stocks. See, gold is for the long term. If you want to try and sell and buy on an hourly basis, you may as well get a second job, because you'll be making about as much per hour. Sure, if gold has a really good day: Sell sell sell... Just keep some aside, because gold really is a game that rewards those who can practice self-restraint.
Be Very Patient
In the gold game, you absolutely have to be patient. The value of the metal is tied directly to the value of the dollar, and conversely, so as inflation gets worse, the metal gets better. If you want to get rich in a day's time, go ahead, play the lottery, but if you want something to retire on, get some gold and watch it improve in value as time goes by. This is how the real, good, smart investments work: Over time.
