Car Insurance For Younger Drivers
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you are a young person, even if you are really careful, you will usually pay more for your car insurance than other drivers. This is because statistics show younger people are more likely to cause serious accidents than older drivers. In fact one in five young drivers will crash within a year of passing the driving test.
From the age of twenty-five your car insurance premium will usually be lower if you have not made any claims and have no driving convictions. Drivers between the ages of fifty and seventy are statistically least likely to have an accident so the closer you get to that age range the lower your costs will be.
To ensure your car insurance is as cheap as possible while you are still under twenty five, think about doing an advanced driving course such as Pass Plus. This teaches you about defensive driving, driving in bad conditions and on the motorway. There are also special courses available to show you what to do if your car skids, and ways to get out of the situation safely. Some insurers offer discounts to drivers with these driving qualifications.
Unless you can afford a high car insurance premium, avoid getting a really fast car. A smaller engine is safer for inexperienced drivers. If you do scrape the paintwork on a second hand car you might not be too bothered, but damaging a brand new car can be an expensive business. Even if you claim for the costs of repairs, your premium will be affected in the future.
Reduce your premium in other ways, by getting a steering lock for example. If you are insured to drive your parents car then getting them to add you to their insurance is a good way of getting a cheaper deal. Some companies allow you to build up a no claims discount while you are insured as a named driver, so look for this in the terms and conditions.
Some companies specialise in younger drivers, or have special young driver policies. These are not necessarily cheaper than policies from other companies, so do not accept the first quote you get.
Young female drivers are less likely to make a large claim than young male drivers. The price of your quote will reflect this, and young women can benefit from cheaper deals through dedicated women only car insurance companies.
Shop around for you car insurance, for example through a price comparison website. Do make sure that the level of cover is right for you though, and don't be blinkered by price alone. For a slightly higher premium, there can be a big difference in service, so if you would need a hire car to get to work for example, you may wish to pay a little more for a policy that includes this if your car is stolen or out of action because of an accident.
