Common Symptoms of Autism
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
How do you know what the signs of autism are? Many parents, concerned that their child may have these condition, want to learn about its symptoms. Unfortunately, autism is not always easy to diagnose, as there are many different symptoms and some of these can be found in non-autistic children as well. This article will discuss a few of the more common symptoms of autism.
One symptom of autism is the failure to act like or imitate parents or siblings. Normal children imitate almost everything they see, from movements to facial expressions to language. This however is not true of an autistic child. If you smile at a baby they will smile back at some point. As children grow older, they learn to speak and behave by watching the people around them. This is the beginning of normal development, but it's something that autistic children never pick up. These imitative behaviors are not often seen in autistic kids like they are in normal kids. People often misunderstand the communication methods of autistic children especially those who have not yet learned the art of speaking.
People with autism do not socialize normally, and this becomes apparent at a very early age. Symptoms of autism include refusal to make eye contact, a preference to play alone, and a generally aloof manner. They will tend to communicate through gestures and will have difficulty telling others what they need or want. In environments with other children, autistic children have great difficulty and are often teased or bullied. Autistic children are often placed in special education classes because of this and their difficulty with learning as other children do.
Amazing as it may sound, a child who does have autism, but has not been diagnosed, can sometimes be mistaken for being deaf. The thing about it is that they usually don't speak, don't respond to being spoken to, and if they do talk it sounds different or unusual. So it is no surprise that people mistakenly think these kids are deaf. This is not as common as it used to be, as more people today are learning about autism, but it points out how difficult it is for autistic people to communicate with the world around them. Most autistic children are not responsive to traditional education methods, and they need to be taught through special educational classes. There is a wide range of symptoms of autism seen in children and adults. The complete range of symptoms do not always include the more common ones, so it's not recommended to generalize or think stereotypically about this disease. The degree of expression with autism will basically allow doctors to suggest a particular method or approach to treatment. As far as what causes autism and treatment, you will find two main camps that disagree - traditional medicine and alternative medicine.
