Autism's Common Symptoms
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Parents of autistic children can tell right away that their child is different, but there are many symptoms of autism. So it takes testing and an expert diagnosis to verify if someone is autistic or has another developmental disability that may have similar symptoms. Today we'll talk about the more often-seen symptoms of autism, but do keep in mind that the symptoms vary and their expression can be different from child to child.
The first symptom we'll discuss is failure to imitate. When a baby sees and hears it's parents it will begin to imitate those sights and sounds fairly early in life. This however is not true of an autistic child. Infants quickly learn to smile when smiled upon. As we progress through life we learn to speak, walk, and act by watching the same actions of others. While this is considered normal behavior during development most autistic kids never learn it. Most autistic kids are incapable of learning even the most basic imitation behaviors. People often misunderstand the communication methods of autistic children especially those who have not yet learned the art of speaking.
Self destructive behavior is another symptom of autism. Not every child with autism will but some do, bang their heads, hit themselves or play with dangerous objects. Autistic kids must have extra supervision. Since it is difficult to communicate with autistic children verbally, in some cases they must by physically restrained or medicated to prevent them from doing damage to themselves or others. Parents who are unable to care for their autistic children choose to institutionalize them. Children who display such symptoms are not necessarily autistic, but they always need to be diagnosed and treated by experts.
It's also true that autistic children can be thought to be deaf, but it's just that people don't know he or she has autism. This is because they do not respond to language and often don't speak themselves, and when they do it's in an unusual way. That is why it is very common very undiagnosed autistic children to be thought of as deaf - when they're far from it. Fortunately this doesn't happen as much as it used to due to awareness about autism. Children with autism are able to receive an education, but they must attend special classes that can meet their communication abilities. There is a wide range of symptoms of autism seen in children and adults. While we have looked at some common symptoms of autism, it is difficult to generalize about this disorder, as it manifests in so many different ways. How severe a particular case of autism is will determine much in the way of treatment given, or suggested. Actually, there seems to be a raging disagreement about what exactly causes this disease, and of course there's disagreement about how to treat it.
