Revenge refers to one's desire in getting even. That is, to be able to retaliate for having been hurt, lost, or humiliated or to merely want others to feel the same way as they made them feel us and make their pride become their disgrace. One can do this even if the target of revenge did not have the slightest idea of having done harm to the other. It is just another form or reciprocating but in a negative way.
There are a number of motives as to why people seek revenge but one thing that is common to all of these motives is that one seeks to bring back or gratify his pride as his goal after having to suffer humiliation and shame. A part of one's self, emotionally or physically, got hit and the dominating emotion to compensate and gratify this is to do something against the aggressor.
One of this reasons is that somebody feels attacked and that he is suffering unfairly by having lost or gotten injured. This causes the individual to feel mixed feelings such as disgrace, anger, hate, or envy. This is caused by circumstances that range from an unconscious and subtle gesture of action or tactless words that were spoken to a deliberate and open physical attack or reprimand.
When someone feels seemingly inferior to someone who has more power or better conditions especially when the other person attained it in dishonest ways, he tends to be dominated by the desire to get revenge because of being powerless over the other. This emotion is even made stronger when others are in the same situation and in a lower position and the person feels sorry for it.
One common reason for seeking revenge is that an individual wants to defend honor. This honor may be honor of one's self, honor of one's family, or honor of one's affiliation or group. Some People are very sensitive when it comes to this kind of things and their desire to defend their honor whatever it takes is also so strong.
People get revenge in a range of ways and this usually depends on the conditions that an individual is in as well as the personality of the person. People do a lot of different things to look for revenge but all of these are done in order to do something for a self-esteem that was stomped upon.
The most common way of getting revenge is do to another individual what this other person did and make another person as much as possible feel the same way just like how this other individual made someone feel. Teaching another individual a lesson or making another person learn his lesson is also one way of getting revenge and this is done by punishing someone for a wrong deed done or making another person face difficult situations that he deserves.
Forgiving the other individual and live life as it is after losing pride or getting hurt is still the most effective way of getting revenge though. The reason for this is that one makes other people see an individual as someone who can stand up to his own even when he is stomped down and thus he is also building up a good image of himself.
