If you are planning to apply for settlement (also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain) you are required to pass the Life in the UK Test. If your level of English is lower than ESOL Entry 3 and you wish to apply for naturalisation or indefinite leave to remain, you will need to attend combined English language (ESOL) and citizenship classes instead.
The Exam
The Life in the UK Test is only available to take in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). However, if you are taking the test in a centre based in Wales you may request to take a test in the Welsh language, or if taking the test in Scotland you may request to take the test in Scottish Gaelic.
The Life in the UK Test is computer-based and lasts for 45 minutes. The 24 questions in the test are in multiple choice format. The questions can be anything from UK society, culture, law, history, government, democracy, employment issues and Europe. The pass mark is at least 18 questions answered correctly (75%).
Test questions are designed to test your knowledge on the chapters of the book, which are based on chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 of the revised handbook (second edition) "Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship". Most of the chapters are fairly easy, but some require a bit more effort.
Preparing to Pass
The best way to prepare for the Life in the UK Test, whether for British citizenship or for settlement, is to take plenty of authentic practice tests. In practise, many people's learning style is suited to practice testing. It will prove to be a much quicker and more effective way of learning for the official test.
Always remember to take photographic ID before taking the Life in the UK Test. If you have any special requirements or any medical conditions then you should state this when you book your exam.
