While many people want to learn another language, the idea can produce anxiety. But it really isn't that hard to memorize a bunch of words, and this is mostly what learning a new language is all about, at least at the beginner's level. You simply start to learn more words and phrases, then some grammar, and you suddenly realize it isn't so hard after all. What often happens is that people find they can one day speak a new language without even realizing how much they've learned. Not all methods of learning work for everyone, so when you decide to learn French, or any language, you have to use the right method for you.
One of the first principles of learning any language is being open enough to accept the way it works. You may try to learn French, for example, but then not want to let go of the way your own language sounds. What can make the process harder than it has to be is when people want to force the new language to behave like their old one. Remember that every language has its own sounds and grammar. This also means that the structure and grammar of every language is going to be different. When learning a new language for the first time, many people have trouble accepting this. When you start to learn French, you have to be open to the ways that it's going to differ from your own language, and this goes beyond just the vocabulary.
You can also find someone to tutor you. A good tutor can allow you to make much faster progress. Your tutor will be able to give you the kind of instruction you'd get if you signed up for a class; this way you can avoid having to take a class and get the same benefits. If you find that learning on your own with tools like books and tapes is not enough and yet you don't want to actually sign up for a class, a tutor can be the perfect solution. A tutor can give you practice speaking in French and can also give you the kind of formal instruction that is helpful if you ever visit France or another country where French is spoken.
Try to think in French. Get into the habit of turning your thoughts into French, or any language you are learning. As you practice this, thinking in French will become something you do naturally. Once you can think in another language, you'll find that it's much easier to speak it out loud. This enables you to more naturally translate the new language in your head, so you can understand it when it's spoken and form your response without having to think about it for too long.
It is possible to learn a language without a great deal of difficulty. There are many different techniques you can apply that simplify it and make it more enjoyable. You have to be willing to invest a little time to discover what learning strategy is most effective for you. Very often people find themselves trying a variety of courses, tools and strategies for learning a language before they finally find the one they are comfortable with. If this happens to you, there is no reason to be upset. Stick with your lessons and one day you will find yourself understanding and speaking French better than you ever thought possible!
