Plenty of Americans have been wondering if they should learn how to speak Spanish. It isn't just one of the most well known languages around the world, but there is also a growing population of native Spanish speaking people in the United States. As Hispanic commerce continues to rise in North America it has become more important for United States business to keep up with their changing demographics. I have noticed this myself in the sales industry. I learned Spanish because I was losing sales because I could not communicate with prospective clients. This meant that I was losing money, which no one likes to do.
Many people do not realize that 90% of fortune 500 companies and Forbes International 800 companies do not have enough employees that can deal with the Spanish speaking market. What this means is that they can't help a big percentage of their target customers.
Learning the Spanish language will improve the general ability to communicate with the big number of Spanish speaking people that come in the USA year after year. Some people have even started discussing how important it is that Americans should learn Spanish to start keeping up with the needs of Hispanic immigrants.
As you might have guessed there isn't a normality of opinions on this situation. Some people believe if Americans started to learn Spanish on a larger scale, they would be helping themselves in the long run. If you know Spanish it puts your resume at the head of the list. This allows you not only to be eligible for more jobs but will also make you more money.
A number of people also understand that once you learn another language such as Spanish, you will also be learning about another culture. When you learn about other cultures, you can often understand the wants and needs of the people who are a part of that culture.
The other side of the argument is that due to the fact that the amount of Spanish speaking individuals keeps growing, and more Americans can speak Spanish, there is no incentive for these immigrants to learn English. It is not rare to hear stories about Spanish immigrants who have never even attempted to learn English.
The downside to this is that as more Americans learn Spanish actually diminishes the utility of those immigrants who cannot speak two languages.
If a Spanish speaking immigrant does not learn English they will experience a lack of job opportunities. Because of this, plenty more Spanish speaking immigrants won't have the ability to get work and be pushed deep into poverty.
Even though it is always useful to learn Spanish, it doesn't look as if a big majority of the US population will take to understanding Spanish anytime soon. The question that should be important to you is whether or not you are going to further not only your career but raise your grade but also raise your pay class. While you may need to decide this for yourself, I hope that understanding both sides of this argument will help you make a more educated decision.
