Hundreds of thousands go to China for vacation, business and just to travel but never do learn Chinese. You might have considered learning but thought it would take way too long to learn. If you knew it would only take a little time, would you try?
It is not as complex and hard as many people think to learn Chinese. Taking lessons and practicing daily makes learning it not so long and fairly easy. For those with experience speaking another foreign language, only a month is needed to take on entire sentences and understand spoken words. For beginners, a week or less is all it takes to speak whole sentences.
These are only for those wanting to learn to speak the language and not to write or read it. In order to read and write the language, fluency in speaking is not required. Grammatical lessons and learning about the type of words and phrases used commonly in written form however is very important and can take time. A person of average learning speed could expect to learn the alphabet inside of a week, reading and writing it completely.
Chinese is considered a sinitic language, meaning that it is in a family of other languages that are unintelligible between one another in different aspects. Almost one fifth of the world speaks some type of Chinese. There are different variations of this language based on the tone used when speaking it as well as the area.
Up to thirteen dialects of the language exist due to classifications and Mandarin is the most common with the next most common being Cantonese. Standard Mandarin or Chinese is the main spoken language for Beijing and the PRC. It is not only spoken in the United States and Singapore but Chinese is also one of 6 languages that the United Nations uses.
There are many places that Chinese or Mandarin is spoken such as Indonesia, Hong Kong, Peru, Malaysia and the Philippines. Learning to speak the dialect you want will be based on the area you want to visit and what version is spoken there. Learning to read and write it will greatly depend on these same factors.
To speak Chinese, most companies and many individuals offer home lessons. The most popular are those with CDs to listen and learn pronunciation accompanied by books and daily practice time for perfection. Other types of lessons exist such as private tutoring and the military also offers courses. You should decide the best way for you to learn and this will cut the amount of time needed. If you learn faster by hearing and repeating, the CDs are ideal.
