Five Factors that Trigger Emotional Cheating
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The relationship of Will (Matthew Morrison), the music club director and Emma (Jayma Mays), the school guidance counselor at the start of the comedy-drama series typifies emotional infidelity. Both of them were good friends but couldn't deny their strong feelings for each other. There wasn't any physical contact but the attraction made them closer to each other and it made their partners feel jealous too.
A lot of factors can explain why this form of deception occurs. Listed below are five possible factors.
Dissatisfaction in current relationship
When people commit themselves into a relationship, they bring with them their needs, wishes and expectations. When these aren't met, they tend to seek fulfillment through other people. Along the process, he/she might be pleased with a characteristic of a colleague or a friend that his/her partner doesn't acquire. This pleasant feeling can begin the spark of an implicit relationship.
Closeness with a friend of the opposite sex
Attraction stems from knowledge. The more one knows about the person, the greater the likelihood of understanding and appreciation, two elements of attraction. Friendship may start innocently but as months pass by, it can spring into something romantically important. One might consequently imagine what it would be like if they were both available or if they would spend intimate nights together.
Memories of the Past
Some people are still stuck with their relationships in the past. At times, those wonderful moments keep haunting them despite their unavailable status. Nostalgia affects the relationship when the involved handles it inappropriately. When he/she makes effort to relive his experience with an ex, it can be considered a form of betrayal.
Exposure to virtual relationships
Changes in technology has brought convenience both in managing long distance relationships and in straying away. If finding a soul mate is now just a matter of clicks, two-timing can be easily done through virtual communication. Since people can be anonymous in interacting with other Internet users, they aren't scared of revealing their real identity. This fact can encourage an attached person to have regular chat sessions or engage in virtual physical arousal with someone whom he/she shares a connection with.
Pornographic materials
In Psychology, there are studies that confirm that the environment affects the thoughts and behaviors of a person. With the prevalence of pornography on media, the number of aggressive and sexually inclined individuals has increased. When a committed person is influenced by pornography, he/she gratifies his sexual needs by looking at stimulating magazines or imagining sultry women. If this continues, he/he will routinely long for it and consequently, it may lead to emotional unfaithfulness.
It is easier to deny emotional infidelity because there is lack of physical participation but still, it is a kind of betrayal that hurts the deceived. People into it must realize that they are being unfair with their partner and with themselves. If they have major issues, they must properly address them instead of entertaining ideas of seeing someone else. Escaping into relationship fantasies won't do any good in the relationship.
