Many parents are not sure where to draw the line with protecting their children from germs. No one wants to be seen as an over protective worry wart, but no one wants to let their kids get sick. Often, many are not quite sure where the boundary line lies. There are so many places a kid could pick up germs, from the hand cart at the store to his best friend at school. Before you go wiping down all the hand carts with anti-bacterial wipes, remember that you cannot keep them from all germs. You just have to try and make them wise enough to keep themselves safe.
The most important thing you can do in this area is teach your kids about germs. Kids can be surprisingly smart when it comes to their health. Your biggest problem is to make sure they know how germs spread and work. You probably have seen the hand washing posters in schools and public restrooms. These sorts of things are good for children because it teaches them the basics. You don't have to keep them sheltered from everything. Just stress doing things like washing hands before handling food or touching your eyes.
There is no need to make them frightened of things. Being to worried about germs will just make your children more susceptible to them. Being around germs will make your children's immune system stronger. Also take other steps to build a strong immune system, like making sure your children get enough vitamin C and antioxidants. Germs can only be so harmful when your body is strong enough to fight them off.
Just stress the basics of hygiene. Teach your kids to sneeze or cough into their elbow and to wash their hands if they sneeze on their hand. Make sure they wash their hands before handling foods, after using the restroom, and after playing with animals. Throw a bottle of hand sanitizer in their pencil bag if you must. Just try not to have them use it constantly.Using hand sanitizer too often is a little obsessive.
Try to keep in mind that germs affect people differently. Some kids naturally get sick easily. There isn't a whole lot you can do if your child is genetically predisposed to a weak immunes system. With such children you will have to be more careful than others. Some kids need to take extra vitamins and things to supplement their weak immune systems. Exercise and a healthy diet are also ways to strengthen the immune system. Doing these sorts of things for your child at an early age will also help them later in life. As a parent, starting good habits young is one of the best things you can do. Your child will live a long and healthy life if you steer them down the right path.
