Nowadays we are accustomed to match every single occasion in our lives to some products specially manufactured and required by it. It is considered inadmissible for somebody to attend a sophisticated ball wearing anything else but an elegant tuxedo or gown, for instance, matched to the right accessories. The list of situations in which we wear some items because we have to or simply because it is trendy is long, but what we really want is to focus our attention on the very popular and thus fashionable watches.
Top watch manufacturers are no different than any of their counterparts in various industries when it comes to satisfying their costumers' needs. The logical consequence of that trend is that they are able to put on the market a huge range of products thoughtfully designed so as to meet all expectations, from the simplest to the more specialized uses.
Army or military watches are a distinct presence among the wide selection of time keepers the market has to offer. Their very name is highly suggestive of the purpose for which they were intended as this type of watches was specially developed for the armed forces. In fact, the first army watches were mainly naval chronometers which had equipped all vessels before becoming obsolete due to the new technological advances.
But around the time of the Second World War, when every second began to count, other branches of military, and aviation in particular, were greatly interested in these technological advances. Thanks to these new developments, the birth of the first Navigator or Pilot watches was possible. Yet, nowadays the term of 'army watches' is a generic one because it is not only soldiers who wear them, but also civilians. In the case of the latter though, it is the design that attracts them rather than the features they might display.
Despite the various models of army watches manufacturers produce, the main characteristics they display are the same for all of them. They are all items of large sizes, with a diameter of up to 40 mm, have easy-to-read hands and dials, and are colored in dark or camouflage olive-drab. One thing we will never see on such watches is shiny surfaces as the sun reflection can betray the soldier's position to his enemies. Stainless steel is the material preferred for the watch body whereas the strap and buckle can be anything else but metal or reflective plastic.
An illuminated 24-hour display, a dual-zone and a day/date display are other features to be recognized in a military watch. Although they may appear as very simple or ordinary, these characteristics prove to be extremely important for soldiers engaged in military operations in the furthest corners of the world. Isolated from the world by not having television or internet of their disposal, loosing track of time or getting lost in the wilderness are two potential risks they are exposed to.
On the list of features a military watch can have, optional elements such as a stopwatch, alarms and countdown timers can be added as well. By saying alarms we actually mean silent vibration alarms, as it would not desirable for a forgotten alarm to go off right in the middle of an important secret military operation.
Having learnt all these things about army watches, the conclusion we can draw is that many of their features are not special at all. Yet, they offer the exact type of information soldiers engaged in missions in various places around the world and which can prove extremely valuable for them. Things are different in what civilians are concerned since they are wearing these watches only to follow the trend within their group of friends and not because of the characteristic they might have.
