Let's be honest, you're reading this article so you probably need a little help figuring out how your niche should fit into the grand scheme of things. There are many companies on the internet which offer coaching and advice to their clients; I would suggest using one of them if you're not familiar with e-commerce. You really need to check and see if your niche idea can be dropshipped before you get your heart set on it.

Don't over think this; all you need is a little research on various products. If the product has multiple wholesalers then it's probably broad enough and you will most likely be able to find a dropshipper to fit your needs. Just try not to get too specific when choosing a product.
Don't be so set on name brand products that you can't sell anything else. The fact is that you may not be able to dropship a lot of name brands. Nike, for example, is very difficult to find a dropshipper for.
Don't fall into to the trap of targeting a niche that is way too broad. Start out selling in one area and then, if business is doing good, you can slowly add more products to your site. You want to be very careful to be as on target with your niche idea as possible without being too narrow.
