Ponta d Oura is where you could have a holiday of your life, in the tropics, amid a beautifully warm and blue ocean, waving palm trees in a relaxed and friendly environment. No, it is not in the Caribbean, nor Australasia. It in fact is on the African coast, on the southern tip of Mozambique, quite close to the South African border. It is remote, not too easy to reach but a paradise.
Ponta d Oura is a small town that was first developed in the Portuguese colonial time, and today, still bears legacies of that period, like some of its architecture and the nature of its cuisine and certain traditions. It is also a great holiday destination on account of as number of reasons. One of the major reasons is its climate, which is tropical, linked to the Indian Ocean on which shores it is located. It is the combination of these two factors together with the fact that there are 14 off shore tropical reefs of absolute pristine condition that gave rise to its popularity first to scuba divers, but thereafter also fishermen, windsurfers and practitioners of other water sports. This town of which the major part of it's infra structure is devoted to holiday accommodation also offer facilities and reasons for families and other non water sport people to visit the area. Ponta d Oura with its beautiful and safe beaches offer the family a perfect holiday opportunity with appropriate accommodation at hand. Portuguese restaurants and pubs offer traditional fare and good beer at reasonable prices to be enjoyed by all.
Ponta d Oro is located some 680 kilometers by road from Johannesburg, traveling on the N2 towards Durban via Pongola. The turnoff from the N2 leading to Jozini then takes you through Maputuland past two famous national game reserves up to the Mozambique border. Be warned the road from Jozini dam to the border while partly tarred is not good. It has many road works and deviations, but run through a beautiful part of the country in compensation for its poor surface. From the border you need to travel another 14 kilometers to Ponta d Oro, but this can only be achieved by 4x4 vehicles.
