Celebrate the Chinese New Year
The Chinese celebrate their new year like no other country on earth. For those who like to party, the Hong Kong celebration lasts a whopping three days. Expect lots of traditional parades, but do not expect to find any shops open. And make sure you stick around for the jawdropping end of party fireworks.
The Spring Lantern Festival
If the Chinese new year celebrations have not tired you out, then you will be pleased to here that the party continues in fine style with the Spring Lantern Festival. Starting on the final day of new year celebrations in Hong Kong, you will see the city lit up spectacularly with thousands of coloured lights.
The Ching Ming Celebrations
In April, spring arrives, and the people of Hong Kong like to celebrate the fact. Hong Kong families traditionally visit the sites of their familial graves and leave gifts, mostly in the form food. You will see lots of incense and joss sticks being burned, creating an unforgettable ritualistic atmosphere.
The Tin Mau Festival and the fishermen of Hong Kong
This is the festival to see if you have any sort of interest in boating and the sea. Fishermen from all over Hong Kong decorate their vessels with streamers and lanterns and travel to temples in which they ask the fishing god Tin Hau for a prosperous year at sea. Celebrations take place in April or May depending on the lunar calendar.
The unique Cheung Chau Festival
This celebration takes many unique forms, the likes of which you will simply marvel at. This festival is big, bright, and a teeny bit silly, culminating in a climbing competition with a difference. A competition to climb a hill made from buns. The wacky celebrations take place in May.
Celebrate at a Buddha Birthday Party
May brings the birthday of Buddha, and all are welcome to celebrate. His birthday is a national holiday and Hong Kong celebrates by carrying each of the Buddha statues from the sacred buildings of the city, and giving each of them a bath.
