One of the first natural zoos to be found anywhere on earth is the Miami MetroZoo. It mimics as closely as possible the natural habitat of its inmates. Its animals originate from countries such as Australia and Africa.
There is not a cage in sight, and the landscape is like that of the African plains. The inhabitants can roam freely around the grounds, with groups of animals that cannot safely mix being kept apart by man-made moats rather than fences and railings.
You will see lions, tigers, bears and elephants at the MetroZoo, as well as komodo dragons and monkeys of all kinds. But what the zoo really specialises in is conserving endangered animals from around the globe, like the black rhino for example.
Have you ever dreamed of feeding a giraffe? Well now that dream can become a reality at the MetroZoo Samburu Giraffe Feeding Station, which allows to get up to eye level with the giraffes and stretch out to feed them. The station is open daily.
The Aviary at MetroZoo is phenomenal. A giant open air aviary, its exhibits show the fascinating links between birds and dinosaurs and how they are now believed to be direct relations. There are more than three hundred species of bird that live here, all of whom are rare and need protection.
The Miami Performing Arts Centre has also teamed up with the MetroZoo to form Zootroupia, a group which presents arts performances at various zoo locations. Each Sunday Asian cultural performers will put on displays at the Wings of Asia Aviary too.
If you want to see all of the zoo, then you better pack some comfortable footwear as there are hundreds of acres of grounds to see. Alternatively you can rent a bike from the zoo, and they also have specially designed two seater bikes for couples and four seater bikes for families and groups.
A new petting zoo and playground have just been added to the MetroZoo facilities, so there are now more things than ever here to keep your little ones entertained. And there is no need to worry about the heat as there are plenty of water fountains, shaded zones and misters en route around the park, helping you and your children to cool down.
