1) Make sure you know what you want to do. Work out what is important to you and also how you are going to achieve it. Start by making lists and don't stop. You will need a list about what your goals are and how you are going to achieve them. Then there will be a list stating what can get in your way and how to eliminate it. It could be the case that there are events and people that are holding you back and they have to go. Some will be obvious such as drink and drugs, but you will also have to get rid of the people who are involved in this part of your life.
2) Work out who will be the people who can help you and this does not mean find people to use. By talking to people who are in positions of authority it is possible to get tips from them. Learn what motivated them and also what it is about them that got them to the position they are now. With everyone else being nice will always be a good thing. This can be for a number of reasons ranging from them deciding you are a nice person and deserve promotion to them being prepared to help you out of things start to go wrong.
3) Life skills may not be a phrase used in the workplace but if they can be developed there is every chance that it will help you to progress your career. Being polite and friendly will not make you appear to be a threat so you can get through the day by doing your job and then some. Help out colleagues who need it but don't try to take over especially if the boss is involved. Nothing is going to cut back your chance of promotion than the boss thinking you are after their job.
4) Always be thorough and make sure that meetings and events run smoothly. A bit of knowledge can make sure that there are no faux pas and if you can ask people about their family and interests without mixing them up you may find you are invited to attend more important events.
5) Don't get down if things do not advance as quickly as you would like them to. Promotion and career advancement can be a marathon not a sprint and with careful planning you will get the position you want in a reasonable time scale.
