The Golfing Slice - Golf's Annoying Guest
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The golfing slice is like that relative who comes to stay for a weekend and it feels like three years. Nearly all beginners come across this at some time or another in their careers.
The golfing slice is mostly caused when the head of the club hits across the ball in a slapping motion. A solid hit on the ball has not occurred, which causes the ball to veer off course, not fly as far, and typically strike trees and other hazards.
Nevertheless, you will be glad to know that a number of ways can correct it.
Simple physics has proven that when the ball is spinning clockwise after being hit with the backswing in golf, this causes the air to be pulled to its left, which can cause the ball to travel in the opposite direction of the air, and thus the ball travels way right. People try to prevent this by overcompensasting their motions by keeping their club head down when they address the ball. Ths is like treating the flu with cough medicine!
Golfers suffering from slicer syndrome are suffering because their downswing is beginning on too much of an inside path. This then causes the effect of the golfer then redirecting the club at the top of the swing and come across the ball on the outside to in path. Do this long enough and you quickly become the next resident of slice city.
To avoid this, all you have to do is make sure your take-away is straight back and on an outside path. Downswinging on an outside path will be more difficult for you to fall into, which is good. It will encourage you to swing more from the inside on the downswing, thus causing you to not slash across the ball but actually hit the ball on the inside which should produce a draw!!!
Hey, now you're doing it right!
Practice this by going to the range, standing behind the ball, and picking out a target.
Next, place a tee about two feet in front of the golf ball and a few inches right of the target you're aiming at. Now, when you swing, you can see if you are following through completely to this second tee.
This will encourage you to develop a perfect swing on the inside path and let you follow through on the outside path like you should. If you are lefty, please reverse the directions (you guys are used to that right???).
The worst results of this drill will be that it significantly reduces a slice, if not produce a full out draw!!
At best you could develop a powerful draw swing which could add near 100 yards to your tee shot! This could invigorate you and bring a lot more enjoyment to an already enjoyable game.
Slicing can ruin a game for a golfer, and it is so easy to fix. Understand the primary cause of slicing, and then eliminate it from your habits and you will watch your performance soar!
