Pitching Mechanics: Your Foundation to Pitching Success
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you want to stand out as a pitcher, you must learn how to throw with proper pitching mechanics. If you throw with the right technique you will increase your velocity, minimize the risk of injury and have pinpoint control of each pitch you throw.
There are those pitching coaches out there that dont thoroughly understand proper mechanics or throwing technique. As much as they try and help their pitchers, they end up doing the opposite and hurt them by teaching them old deliveries that end up jeopardizing their careers. Coaches need to understand that you should never mess with the natural arm slot of a baseball pitcher. If they pitch with a three-quarter arm slot delivery, you should leave it alone. In fact, most pitchers throw that way and they have great movement on the ball. Many coaches will see a pitcher in the major leagues throwing a certain way and they think all pitchers should be cloned. Everyone is different.
Can proper mechanics increase your pitching velocity? Absolutely! Most pitchers can throw harder than they do right now if they would just throw with their entire body as opposed to relying solely on arm strength for velocity. I see many pitchers, particularly young and inexperienced, using their arm to try and generate more velocity. This not only puts more stress on their throwing arms, but these pitchers are clearly not throwing with their full potential. I have seen many pitchers gain five miles an hour in a matter of minutes by changing a few quick mechanical errors.
Without proper pitching mechanics, pitch workloads, functional strength and flexibility, appropriate nutrition, and lets face it, good genetics you are prone to arm injuries. You can avoid a lot of the arm pain with proper pitching mechanics simply by using your body in a way that will allow you to transfer energy appropriately toward your target. It is still important to note that even if you have perfect mechanics you can still be predisposed to injuries to the shoulder and elbow due to overuse, not warming up effectively and many other factors.
In conclusion, proper throwing technique is essential to your success regardless at what level you are currently playing. If you want to excel as a pitcher you need to gain the right knowledge of how to throw the baseball correctly to maximize your velocity and control.
