Online Marketing : A Costly Necessary Evil For Getting Your Business The Customers It Needs To Survive
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Marketing is an expensive venture. It is even more expensive if it turns out to be ineffective. For example, a company I worked for bought advertising space in the magazine you find behind your seat on major airlines. I must note that the magazine is reputable and carry some great products. But, our product wasn't a good fit. So, in the end our company paid thousands to be listed and got very few sales out of the relationship. To be clear it was a total waste of money.
It doesn't matter which form of advertising you do, remember that they fall into the category of a marketing firm. Magazines, coupon distributors, newspapers and all rest qualify. So here is the hitch. If they sell advertising to you, they are your agent and you should realize a return on the money that you gave them. If you don't, kick them to the curb.
You can fire a marketing firm after they provided an unsatisfactory campaign. But, at this point your investment is gone and the customers are still far from visiting your business. The only advice one may give is to make a few calls to see if anyone knows the background and success of the marketing firm. Even this isn't full proof but you can ask for references.
There are dozens of forms of advertising. I will list a few of them here:
TV, Newspaper, Radio, Magazine, Billboards, Online Advertising, Website Promotion, Coupons, Circulars, Trade Shows, Promotional Items like pens and buttons, benches, buses, vehicle wraps, mobile signs, the yellow pages and lastly word of mouth. There are also many other creative examples.
Deciding on the most effective method for your business may end up being a test. This can be expensive. I have always been told that radio is the most effective followed by television and newspaper. But, this is dependent on your offering and the audience you are reaching.
Ok, so here is trick, which form of advertising is best for your business? Unfortunately only you can answer that after extensive testing. My only advice is to hire a company with great marketing skills. They should deliver a return on your investment. It might pay big benefits to get the marketing company to sign a contract guaranteeing their work. Remember, you are paying them. After a bad campaign the worst situation if for them to say "oh well." Doesn't that make your blood boil! You have to perform and so should they.
So, where do you start? I would recommend calling a couple of advertising firms to discuss how they would promote your business and see if they will put together a quote for what they think it will cost to be successful. Have some hard numbers and goals in mind before you call.
