Things You Must Have In Your First Apartment

You have a job, it is now time to kiss your parent's home goodbye or say goodbye to your dorm and move into your first apartment. Expect some anxiety when leaving all the comforts of home or dorm to strike out on your own. Being an adult can be exciting but also full of angst. With a few well chosen accessories and home staples, your new home will be the envy of all your friends who remain with mommy and daddy or dorm mates.
There are a lot of life saving household items a lot of people overlook. Think about fire. Getting hot? You won't be if you put fresh batteries in all your smoke alarms. Make sure a fire extinguisher is one of the first things you buy for your first apartment.
Speaking of safety, Carbon Monoxide (CO2) poisoning can kill. Be sure you have a CO2 monitor and that it is plugged in and working. Inoperable safety devices defeat their purpose entirely.
Next on the list is your privacy. Get some window treatments, something to block the prying eyes of your neighbors. They don't want to watch you vacuuming the floor in your tight-whiteys, just as you probably don't want them to either. Do them and yourself a favor and part with a few bucks for curtains or blinds.
Now that you are safe and have your privacy, you can take a shower. Hey, you're going to need towels for your body and hands. The hand towels are for your guests mostly, but you can use them too.
Kitchen towels are another must have. Sure, you can fill your apartment with paper towels so you will enough for a while, but even all of those will eventually wind up in the dumpster. Save yourself some money and buy real, honest to god cotton towels. You can use them over and over and they will last for years.
If you need a shovel to forge a path through those dirty clothes lying all over your place, get a clue and purchase a collapsible clothes hamper with wheels. You can wheel the thing all over, picking up clothes and putting them in the hamper as you go. On laundry day you can roll the hamper to the laundry room. Once the laundry is done, roll it back full of clean clothes, put the clothes away, collapse the hamper and you have saved yourself some precious floor space while being tidy as all get out.
Throw pillows serve more purposes than just decoration. Get some big ones and use them for extra seating. Put two of them together for that overnight guest whose had a few too many to drive home.
How many kitchen appliances will you really use? My guess is that you will need a crock pot a microwave and a toaster oven. You will also need a refrigerator if that didn't come with the apartment. Do you really think you will be making Belgian waffles, paninis or fondue? Skip these extras, you will never need them.
Your apartment will get dirty. The correct cleaning products for the job will save you cash and time. In your cleaning bucket of tricks you should have:
- Dish soap
- All purpose, preferably antibacterial cleaner in as big a jug as you can find
- Scrubbing compound
- Micro-fiber clothes
- Sponges
- Empty one-liter spray bottles
This should take car of the kitchen and bathroom. For the floors you might want a Swiffer for the occasional wash. However, a broom, dustpan, and vacuum are a must to keep your floors free of dirt and mud.
Even in warm weather a coat rack is a good thing to have. You can hang your keys, handbag, backpack, bikini and any thing you want to return to the store on it and save a bunch of floor space. Hey! You many even have room for a table and chairs.
Table space is rare in any apartment. If you like to share a meal with friends and chat for hours though, you will need a table. Depending on your entertainment style, you may also do fine with just a coffee table. Some place to set down your drinks and chips while watching the big game.
Now that you've got it all together, invite your friends over so they can ooh and aah over what a fine thing you have done with your new place. Hmmm...come to think of it, you may need that blender for Margaritas.
