How to Make a Solar Generator in 3 Easy Steps
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
You could make several different types of solar generators for your house.
If you like to go camping a lot and need power in distant locations, then a portable solar power generator could be what you're looking for.
But if you want to make a solar generator for house, you have two options: you could make one that uses your existing power source, or you could go "off the grid" and build a system that doesn't rely on your existing utilities at all.
Here I'm going to focus on the most basic option available to you - also known as the "on grid" solar generator. Even if you're new to this and haven't made your own energy systems before, you should still be able to follow the steps here and make your own solar generator.
Not only is this method fairly straightforward, the other advantage is that if you produce more electricity than you use in one month you'll get paid by your electric company!
You need only five parts to complete this basic power system: solar panels, an array DC disconnect, an inverter, an AC breaker panel, and a kilowatt per hour meter. Here's how to connect these five parts to ensure that you create a working solar generator:
The first step: connect your array DC disconnect to your solar panels to ensure that the power can be turned on and off.
Next you need to convert the direct current electricity generated from the solar panels into alternating current - the kind that's used in your house. To do this, connect the inverter to your array DC disconnect.
Finally, connect the inverter itself to the AC breaker panel, which is usually found in your garage or on the side of your house in a metal box. This panel connects to all the household appliances in your house and delivers power to them.
Then, if you want to make sure that you get paid by the electric power company, you need to connect your kilowatt per per hour meter to the AC breaker panel and to your grid power source.
The most difficult step is making sure that everything connects to the AC breaker panel properly. If you don't have the skills to do this, you probably want to call a qualified electrician to complete this part for you.
But if you can follow all the steps properly and create your own solar generator, you can start going off the grid right now.
