Looking At Today's Roller Shades
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Roller shades have changed for the better! Today, roller blinds don't look like Grandma's old ones nor are they as finicky. The new designs, rolling mechanisms and materials are trendy, sophisticated and make a fantastic decor improvement for any office or home.
Roller "blinds" is a term of the past to describe these window shades as they are now available in various degrees of opaqueness. Some let softly filtered light through when fully extended. Others have 100% blackout features and other styles have a semi-opaque quality through which only silhouettes can be vaguely seen. Manufacturer's lifetime guarantees usually back the product.
Installation might be a little tricky if you do it yourself, but it is manageable. Almost all companies provide adequate installation guides with their product. That being said, however, it may be to your advantage to have the window shades installed professionally or at least by someone who is experienced in the technique to ensure proper function and fit.
Accurate measurement will ensure proper fitting of these window shades. The measured width of your shade will be equal to the measurement of the head-rail. The fabric portion that hangs from the head-rail is necessarily a little narrower by about 1/2 inch on both sides.
Shades will look and fit best when the measurements are accurate for mounting on the inside or the outside of window casings. Standard widths to match those of standard window sizes are available. In specific cases, however, if a window is too wide for one single shade, it's wise to consider an alternate style of window dressing. Possibly though, you could choose to join two identical shades together with a center seam to form one larger one.
The desired length of the shade must also be taken into account before ordering. Many shades have plain hems that are best to minimize the amount of light leaking through if that is the desired effect. If this is not a concern, there are numerous attractive hems and trims to choose from, such as scallops, fringes or multiple combinations of both.
While on the topic of hems, the operation of pulling the shade up or down is no longer dependent upon on pulling a cord attached to the hem to trigger a fragile spring mechanism. The window shades of today are motor operated. Some have remote control options that is an attractive quality for bed-ridden folk or anyone whose physical abilities are compromised in any way. Some have a manual mechanism made of a continuously looping cord to raise and lower the shade without fuss.
Mechanical timers are available for some positioning mechanisms. For safety sake, any guided positioning mechanism can be attached to the wall or to the inside of the window. All of these new methods and styles aid consistent positioning and remove the potential of staining or damaging the fabric.
Most new shades are made from any combination of materials such as vinyl fiberglass, cellulose fiber, polyesters, and foam acrylic. Usually foam acrylic covers the back of a shade to absorb incoming light ensuring the optimal darkening effect. The street side of the shade can be covered with white laminate or have a finish just as decorative as the side that faces inside the room.
Panels are available as sheers, semi-sheers, semi-opaque, opaque or 100% blackouts depending on your needs or your preferences. The look and texture can be woven such as in canvas or cotton, mimic natural fibers like bamboo or suede, be patterned in paisleys or brocades, etc. They are available in any color imaginable.
Your home or will take on a trendy new look when you invest in today's beautiful roller shade window treatments.
