What is Oil Paint?

Oil paint is a mixture of color particles and oil. Although the old masters, who made their own paints, mixed pigment with a variety of oils and other substances, today, linseed oil is the common agent used by manufacturers to make paint.

In the hands of a master, the oil paints can be layered and blended on canvas to create rich, beautiful images. Oil paintings can be created by almost anyone.

Water and oil paints can spend different amounts of time to dry. The chemical process is different from water-based paints, because oil doesn't evaporate like water into the atmosphere. Depending on the moisture present in the atmosphere, oil can dry at a different rate. This is benefit if you want to blend colors but are working on a project that cannot be complete in one sitting. Artists need to take their time on oil paints so it is desirable to clients. Wet oil paintings should not be moved. The clients painting will not turn out right if rushed to a new location before drying.

A Little History

Nature provided the base of all paints using elements such as plants and flowers boiled and baked in the sun by world renowned artists like Van Eyck. Some also mixed wax or other ingredients into the concoction. The mid 1800's introduced paint in tubes with cap covers like they are today.

Creating more flexibility with time for artists came about with the development of tube paints. Instead of devoting their attention to making paint, they could now concentrate on the work itself. Artists began to paint different after this. Packaged paints innovated artists allowing them to choose from multiple colors and free up more time to paint. This freedom and flexibility in their life translated into their work and is said to have lead to the impressionist movement.

Creating Art with Oil Paint

Stay away from stuffy areas. It is hard to get rid of the smell of oil paints. Also, odorless turpentine which is used as a paint thinner and to clean brushes, is not completely odorless as the name implies.

Canvases and palettes are important to painters, but light is an important factor in how a painting turns out. Have plenty of light when working. Find a space with natural light before turning on any lighting.

Canvas paintings are generally oil paintings. Primer is needed even for oil paints on a canvas to prevent fibers from quickly absorbing oil. This primer used by artists is called gesso. Primer with water as its basic component for artists is gesso. Apply at least two thin coats to your canvas, allowing each coat to thoroughly dry.

Painting can begin after the gesso dries. You can apply the paint using a brush, a palette knife, your fingers, or whatever works for your. There is no specific strategy needed to begin your painting. Make sure you enjoy the process.
