What Makes A Meal Western?

European and American cuisines generally fall under the classification of Western food, although, at times, Western cuisine also includes meals of other countries in Oceania like Australia. And what do food lovers readily think about when they hear Western food? Giant cuts of meat, three decks of burger, a plateful of fries, sausages, ribs, among others.
Can't tell between Western and Eastern cuisine? Both have defining qualities that can be traced back to their individual cultures. First, they differ in serving size. Western food means huge sizes; most probably because Caucasians are bigger in body built compared to Asians and thus require more food intake. In contrast, meal servings of Asians are relatively smaller, as their body size is.
In Western cooking, meat is also used in large quantities. If in Asian cooking, meat is only part and parcel of the meal, in Western cooking, meat is the main star. Think of steaks. Juicy and thick slabs of tender meat are the main star of the meal. There are other players on the plate, such as mashed potato and steamed vegetables, but the meat is the reason why the plate is prepared in the first place.
In Western food, rice is considered just a side dish. Much like how mashed potatoes, steamed green beans, corn on the cob, and fries are eaten. If in Asian cooking, a complete meal that doesn't include noodles must involve rice, that isn't true in Western cooking. Rice is even flavoured some of the time.
But quite the same as Asian dishes, Western food also puts great emphasis on the use of condiments and seasonings. You can find catsup, mustard, gravy, and other sauces and condiments easily available in dining establishments specialising in Western dishes.
In Singapore, Western cuisines are now abundant unlike before. Fast food restos serving Western meals are now easy to come by. Western foods are also typically served in hawker centres, or al fresco complexes that house food stalls, so you can have access to a burger or fries should you crave for them.
What's great about dining out these days is that both Western and Eastern methods of cooking are vastly available mainly because Westerners seem to have been caught by Asian food and vice-versa. This marriage of tastes has encouraged more restaurants to offer both kinds of food. Thus, where west meets east, there can definitely be found a satisfying eat.
