During a personal conversation with another person, it's not just what you say that counts. It's also how you say it. If you are angry you will probably shout. If you are happy you will smile. If you're left without anything to say you will throw your hands in the air. Windows emoticons developed out of the need to have something similar during an online conversation. A way to let the other person know how you really feel about all this.
An emoticon is simply an icon which you add to your conversation to convey a feeling or facial expression which would otherwise have gone unnoticed. With emoticons you can show the other person that you are smiling ' or frowning. You can shed a silent tear or roar with laughter. You can give an idea a thumbs up..... Or a thumbs down.

On top of using emoticons, another option is to use message shorthand to get across your point with less typing. By using ASAP for 'as soon as possible', you save yourself quite a lot of typing. And the abbreviation a/s/l has become quite common during first online encounters ' it stands for a question: 'what is your age, sex and location?'
Emoticons add some flavor, some feeling, to a medium that would otherwise have been rather lifeless. They have indeed become an important dialect of their own. A sort of modern day hieroglyphical language that proves the old saying that a picture can indeed sometimes say it better than a 1000 words.
