Your Website: Neglect it at Your Peril

Close to 40% of the small business websites on the Internet are not generating the desired results. In many cases, their owners have no idea why. Is your site one of the forty percent? You'll know in just a few minutes if you answer just five questions.
1. Does the design of your website portray the correct image? If you own a day care business you might want a colorful and cartoonish site that says "fun", but if you own a financial services firm, you probably want a site with a wholly different look and feel, a site that says "expertise" and "integrity". Ask a few friends what comes to their minds when they look at your site; you may learn a lot.
2. Is your website copy well written? To get the answer to that question you must first answer several others. Will your copy appeal to your target audience? Will they find it interesting? Is it credible? Does it include an appropriate, compelling call to action?
3. Does your website include a frequently asked questions page? Remember that most readers skim, and are lazy about reading to gather new information. A FAQ page gives you another way to convey to them the information you feel is most important. As such, it can be a great sales tool.
4. Does your site include an "about us" page? Does it portray you and/or your business as honest, customer-oriented, and professional? My websites on online degree programs outline my professional experience in higher education and list both my email address and telephone number.
5. How easy do you make it for your website visitors to contact you? Remember, an online order form is very different than contact information. Some people...myself included...will not order from a website that does not display contact information. Reputable businesses, many people believe, want prospective customers to be able to reach them. Your best course of action is to display your contact information, or a link to it, prominently on every page of your site.
Your website will get you the best results if you view it as a work-in-progress, not a finished product. Review and evaluate it regularly. Seek the opinions of others. And, don't be afraid to make changes.
