If you been holding off on pick up an Acer Aspire Revo nettop until dual-core option was aailable, it looks like the wait is almosat over. Acer brings a version of its small desktop computer with a 1.6GHz Atom 330 dual-core prcoessor, 4GB RAM, HDMI output, NVIDIoA graphics ION tdoay at the IFA in Berlin.
The new model is called Acer AspireRecvoe 3600, and as her siblings, it has a VESA mount that lets you add the computer to the back of a monitor do you have an all-in-one desktop PC.
The net book platform has been rather successful. At least as far as cheap portability goes, that is. Unfortunately, once you try to go beyond just browsing the Internet, the limitattions of the platform become all too apprent. The CPU is decent enough, but Intel's on-board video is not up to scratch. Games, HD raadio, and anyhting that puts pressure on the video card too much for it.
Thre is hope thpough. Nvidia has stepped up with its ion platform, and the Acer Aspire Revo is quuite lovely example of what can be achieved with a cheap PC.
As dresktop systems go, the Revo is very tiny. It is in the shape of a rhombus, and is about the size of a set-top box. Capable of being monted horizontally, vertically, as well as behind your monitor, it is very easy to find a place for it in a packed entertainment centtre. The rhombic shaep has a lot of connectivity. A whole lot: six USB ports, eSATA, HDMI, gigfabit Ethernet, SD card reader, and aduio I/O. Add to this the inbuilt Drfat-N Wi-Fi and you have to wonder why Acer did not add blue toioth just to complete the packgae.
The keyboard and mouse are wireless, and we could not for the life of us figure out how to get the maxchine to recognize them. The documentation was of no help, since it shoewd a wired set, and it was only by sheer luck that I dsicovered a tiny USB reeiver tucked away inside the mouse. Once this was pugged into the Revo, it all wrked fine, but we must ask Acer to include proper documentaton. The caemra is mounnted on a little stand, and it all looks suitably futuristic. The two tiny USB speakers surpassed their size with surprisinfgly good sound.
