The Coming Need For Cargo Screening Training

In 2007 congress passed the 9/11 act. As a part of that act, all cargo being transported on cargo aircraft must be screened. This new law is scheduled to take effect on August 1st, 2010. This has the potential to greatly affect the passenger airline industry and could result in severe delays and other logistical nightmares. There is a new need for cargo screening training.
As a way to reduce the potential for untimely flight delays, TSA has implemented certified cargo screening facilities. These locations will allow shippers to pre-screen cargo before it arrives at the airport thus reducing the potential for bottlenecks as a result of the 100 percent screening requirement. Among other things, these facilities will be able to screen cargo where it is packaged and as a result will be able to maintain packing integrity. What's more, the use of these facilities is voluntary thus allowing businesses to determine what it best for their individual needs.
Certainly there will be an increased need for those who are qualified to perform the screening operations. Some of the necessary skills will be x-ray screening, x-ray image reading, bomb and explosive detection and the ability to provide electronic trace detection.
Any screener must have a near reflex ability to spot suspicious items that might be explosive in nature. This can be a learned skill of course, however time and training will be needed to develop this kind of ability. Of course there are many training options available for anyone interested in learning.
Similarly, x-ray screening and the interpretation of the images that creates will be another sought after skill. A screener must be intimately familiar with the x-ray screening hardware and must also be well training in understanding the images the system produces.
As was mentioned earlier, there now exists a number of programs and training kits as well as assistance from TSA itself to help a potential screener get up to speed. This training will take some time, money, and a strong desire to master each of the items mentioned here and potentially more specialized training.
The time has arrived, and the need for qualified screeners will likely increase as the 9/11 act is fully implemented. Anyone interested in becoming a screener will probably find opportunities assuming they have either the experience, the training, or both, to become an effective cargo screener.
