The generic term, RFID, is used to describe a system that transmits an identity of an object, by way of a unique serial number. This is done wirelessly by use of radio waves, and does not require either contact nor line of sight to work. The data can be read through the body, any clothing, or non-metallic materials.
The purpose of this system is to allow data to transmit using a portable device (or a tag) which is read by the reader and processed. The way it is processed will vary depending on the needs of the user. This data can include information such as the location or specs of the item. This system became popular due to its ability to track objects in motion.
This technology is employed in many different ways, some that we use daily but may not realize. Retail stores seem to make the best use of this system by preventing items from being stolen. The security bars we walk through when entering and exiting a store are the readers for the tags placed on these items. When they are not deactivated by a cashier, the alarm goes off. This technology can help lower the cost for the store, but many will pass these savings on to the customer.
More recently this system has been used as a payment method. Many toll bridges now offer an EZPass for regular commuters. Also many semi-truck companies use RFID passes to allow their trucks to bypass the scales on occasion, allowing more trucks to ship more things in a shorter amount of time. There are also some fast-food chains trying this technology as a payment option for their drive-thru customers.
RFID, as it is becoming more refined, it is being experimented with in all walks of life. Another common use is for identifying pets. Many are also talking about implanting these chips into humans, allowing their medical history and allergies, for example, to be found in a snap, lowering the chance of a mistake or injury during treatment.
