Many companies care enough about their employees' health to instigate workplace physical fitness programs that encourage their staff to stay fit. However, these programs tend to be ignored by the same workers who need them the most. Why does this happen?
These people are not "lazy", although they may appear on the surface to be simply too sedentary and relaxed to care about their physical health. Poor mental health has a heavy influence on how a person's body feels and reacts, and psychological "blocks" can drastically reduce the desire to take all the necessary steps - both in and outside of the workplace - that could improve the workers' physical health.
For this reason, rewarding them for participating in a health and wellness program will not work any better than punishing them for their lack of interest. Counseling, combined with a program that is designed to address both their physical and mental needs is much more effective. Powerful motivation is necessary to help these employees rise above their apathy toward life and WANT to improve their health.
Before addressing employee health issues, a company must sometimes focus first on improving an individual's mental well-being. Ideally, this can be done by making psychological counseling available directly in the workplace, but many organizations do not have the budget to turn such a dream into reality. A worthwhile and often effective alternative is to provide employees with other, less costly, tools that they can use to address and "treat" their mental health issues. These tools might include books and software designed to help people recognize and overcome the psychological problems that are blocking their pathway to attaining better physical health, or it may be as simple as providing your employees with quality online resources that can help them to help themselves.
Before you label an employee as "lazy" or "slothful", it is always best to explore further and determine any underlying causes of their disinterest in healthful living. This knowledge can help you to motivate the person towards change!
