Injury Playing Sport

When it comes to being involved in sports there is always the risk of incurring an injury. Depending on the type of sport that you could have a higher chance of receiving a certain injury, one of the most common injuries among football players is a hamstring injury. These injuries often occur when a player over extends his leg or takes a fall on a slippery surface and depending on the severity can sideline the player for a matter of weeks or a matter of months.
When we refer to the hamstring we are talking about any of the three muscles that are located behind the thigh area towards the back of the leg. As this muscle is commonly used in any sort of running or kicking sports it is quite a common injury among many sport participants. It is also joined to other common problem areas including the knee and the hip and any strains in these areas can put additional strain on the hamstring muscle causing it to easily tear.
As sport is big business there are a wide range of preventative measures available to help ensure that the hamstring muscle is strong and supple to ensure that it does not tear easily. Classes such as pilates and yoga work hard to stretch these muscles and ensure that they have good flexibility.
In pilates, elasticated bands focus on allowing the hamstring to feel resistance and therefore strengthening each section of the muscle.
When it comes to determining your flexibility, the hamstring is a muscle that is commonly used as a measurement and when it comes to doing the sit and reach test it is infact this muscle that is being tested. When you are told to "touch your toes" it is in fact the hamstring muscle that you are stretching and strengthening.
