How To Start An Online Business: You Can Make A Return On Investment On The Internet And Be Successful
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Making a living on the internet is no small task. If you're thinking about starting an online endeavor you will hear the experts spouting off topics like SEO, traffic generation, how important your content is and what your market looks like.
I certainly don't mean to discourage the online entrepreneur. In that, I want to discuss some of the things you should do before calling an expert. Hopefully, you will be able to organize your thoughts and nail down a few of the "must do's" before wasting resources.
The very first thing that you need to do is not to get sucked into all the different options or offerings. If you do get sucked in, you will promote every non-working product out there before getting it right. Don't ask me how I know. In this, sit down and define your niche. What are you passionate about and what will be easy for you to promote. I might say easier because you know just about everything there is to know about the product or offering chosen and you will be able market it like a professional. You may think that "stop smoking" is a fantastic niche because you would really like to stop smoking yourself. Turns out that everyone else does too and the niche is too competitive to do any good without deep pockets.
Another niche example: If you love chickens and know everything there is to know about raising them and hatching eggs, doesn't it stand to reason that you would promote products, goods or services related to chickens. And because you're a chicken person, you probably know lots of other chicken people. You might decide to sell egg incubators or information on incubators in a digital format.
After settling on the perfect niche, you will need to define your product. On the internet, there are two predominately chosen formats. The first is to offer a physical product. The second is a digital product. Some online stores offer both. In the end there are endless options but defining your offering early is important in setting up your online presentation or store.
Selling a digital product created by you or someone else, given that you have the rights to resell, is much easier that selling physical product. After considering the logistics involved, additional cost of a good merchant account, carrying inventory and shipping, you can see why going the digital route may be more your speed.
Creating your site: You may hire a professional or choose to create your site yourself. If you choose to do it yourself, expect a huge learning curve if you're not familiar with coding sites, graphics etc. In the end, it may actually save you money simply because your site is done right and in a timely fashion.
The great thing here is that most web designers can help you crack the code on items previously discussed like merchant accounts and shopping carts. Buying and understanding a web design book for starters is highly recommended before calling a designer.
After your site is up and running, don't expect the traffic to flow in. You will have to promote your site like crazy and spend the necessary resources it takes to bring in the visitors. Of all the tips, this is the most integral. Spend the money with a reputable online marketing firm. Believe me; you will spend far more trying to go this one alone. And remember, without visitors there will be no sales. Good luck!
