Some time in the future we will have places to live under the sea. Those places will have characteristics that will make possible for human beings to carry out activities in a normal way to an extent similar to earth cities. Fixing plumbing issues is an activity that still will be needed in the houses of cities under the ocean. These types of handy jobs will have an extra challenge derived from the fact of being working under tons of water above their heads.
Human beings need big amounts of oxygen to live, so those places will need to be built in such a way that there is not lack of this element. This makes us think that those cities will be inside a bubble isolated from the water. This bubble will probably have a parabolic shape in order to maximize the strength of the materials utilized in its construction. This is due to this parabolic shape has the biggest resistance among all the shapes built up with the same type of material.
Cities under the water for human beings convey a numerous quantity of challenges to be resolved before thinking of people living there from birth to death. Transportation to surface of the ocean would need to be redesigned. I can think of an elevator isolated from the water emerging to an island or a platform in the surface surrounded by ships. There may be also a small base for planes that could take passengers to earth cities in a quick manner.
We can imagine an extended network of submarines travelling under the ocean from one submarine city to another one. The routes will be defined in order to take advantage of submarine currents. Also, those routes will help to prevent people from getting lost in the immensity of the oceans. Just think of the thousands of different submarine models of all sizes travelling through those roads under water. It will be like living in another planet.
Every day activities of human beings will generate trash and remains of materials used. We would need to develop a disposal system that transports this trash and remains to some place out of the submarine cities in order to prevent pollution. This will be a major problem because it will consume big amounts of energy to move non usable material. The government entities that will be defined to rule those cities will have to develop clever campaigns to convince people to pay taxes to maintain such systems.
As we can see, fixing plumbing problems in a city under the ocean will be just one of the many processes that will need to be adapted to such a new environment. We are still centuries from a scenario that pushes us to enhance our horizon under the water, but it is not an impossible situation. It is good to start thinking how we would face all the challenges that a city under the water will present us. Imagination and technology will have to work hand to hand.
