On September 4th the fifth annual London Skyride took place and many visitors and residents of London came to join in the event. British Cycling and Sky now run the event which used to be known as the London Freewheel, helping the mayor of London promote cycling in the city. With the influx of visitors coming to London hotels and other businesses enjoyed extra trade as a result of the event.
The target of the event is to promote cycling as a means of transport with the ultimate goal of trying to get one million more people using their bikes regularly by 2013. This is not just a London based activity, events are being held throughout the country, with all different kinds of routes to choose from.
There will be another event next year which begs the question why not stay in one of the many west end hotels, bring or rent a bike and join in the fun? People of all ages and cycling skills came this year and rode around the route at their own pace taking in many of the capital's iconic sights along the way such as Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and London Bridge. The route is 15 kilometres long and remains traffic free between 10am and 4pm.
As with all events of this nature crowds gather to watch the participants and are treated to fancy dress, unusual bikes, such as old penny farthings and celebrities can be spotted amidst the cycling crowd. This year 55,000 people got on their bikes and joined in the ride, around the west end hotels and shops, over bridges, past iconic buildings and along streets usually filled with cars, taxis and buses.
As well as the open roads to cycle along at whatever pace they chose, the parks were filled with activities which could be enjoyed by cyclists and spectators alike. Information was available for those keen to get back on their bike but uncertain about riding after a long break and there were bicycle maintenance guides too. The parks were buzzing with activity.
With buskers and other entertainers on street corners there was entertainment for the cyclists and the spectators along the way. The atmosphere of the city was completely different without the constant noise of traffic and even those who happened to be staying in London's West End hotels on holiday were able to enjoy the city in this unique way.
Other traffic free cycling events take place in cities around Britain, as well as cycling events to raise money for charities. There are a variety of events to choose from, some routes more challenging than others. Altogether this extra publicity and increased awareness makes the goal of one million new cyclists seem totally achievable.
Traffic free cycling is liberating, allowing people to enjoy the streets of London without having to worry about the pollution and dangers of cycling in the hectic, busy streets. With the event growing in popularity each year local businesses are enjoying another bumper weekend when even more visitors come to stay in places such as Kensington hotels which many people seem to enjoy more than just the day's cycling.
