Rather than staying at one of the various hotels instead why not book you and your family one of the many villas in Crete. Certainly, there are a number of advantages to be had from doing this and one is that you have more freedom to choose what to do and when to do it. Plus staying in a villa can often save you quite a considerable sum of money as well.
The great thing about renting villas is that they almost feel like a home away from home and gives you a chance to really sample what the locals love about their country. In fact, renting a villa rather than staying in a hotel offers you the chance to explore and enjoy everything that the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean has to offer.
Whilst staying on the island there are plenty of activities to do as well as museums and archaeological sites for you to visit. During these, you will be able to learn more about the history of this island. But although most of the museums and sites are free to enter, there are a few, which will require you to purchase a ticket.
Plus you need to be aware when organizing visits to such places that they are not open throughout the week or year. The Historical Archives of Crete Museum which is to be found in the town of Chania is only open from 08.00 to 13.00 and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Along with learning about Crete's history, there are other things that you may want to do and which are a little more exciting (especially for the kids). If you want, why not book yourself on to a Pirate Ship Tour, which offers you the chance to visit some of the islands more secluded beaches.
During the tour on either the Barbarossa or Captain Hook, stops are made where you have a chance to take photographs or participate in the games organized by the ships crew. To further add to authenticity of the trip all crew members wear full pirate regalia.
The other alternative to spending time as member of a pirate ship is to go on a dolphin tour. These tours take place throughout the summer months and leave from the harbour of Rethymno. You have a choice of going on either a two or 3-hour tour with the much longer one having a stop at the coastal village of Panormo where lunch can be purchased at one of its many tavernas.
Yes staying in a hotel can give you all the luxury that you could ever want. But staying in villas in Crete offers you the chance to sample what life is really like for those who live on the island throughout the year. Also it provides you with freedom to choose what you do and when during the time that you stay there.
