Where Exactly Is Ponta D' Ouro?

Ponta d'Ouro, or Ponta, as it is popularly known, is a small village of Portuguese colonial style located at the southernmost tip of Mozambique just over the South African border near Kosi Bay in northern Kwa Zulu Natal. It is blessed with pristine white beaches, clear water and superb scuba diving opportunities at some 14 off shore reefs.
Ponta da Ora is some 630 kilometers from Johannesburg, which would normally be a comfortable 7 hour drive, but due to the poor road conditions from Jozini dam to the border, and beyond, you need to add another 3 hours to your ordinarily expected travel time. It is best to make the travel to Ponta part of your holiday adventure rather than have the notion of getting there as soon as possible, due to many road works and deviations along the Pondoland interior. Some 20 odd kilometers before the border post is the small town of Emangusi where the tar road ends and the road becomes a deep sand track suitable really only for 4x4 vehicles, especially beyond the border where a 4x4 would be mandatory, particularly in the rainy season. You can leave your automobile at the border, however, and arrange to be picked up by 4x4 and transported to Ponta. Your automobile will be attended to by a security guard until you return. If you were to make use of self catering accommodation you would be well advised to ensure that you have sufficient food stuff, particularly frozen meat, with you as the little cantina's in Ponta only stock the very basic of stuff. Emangusi has a large and well appointed supermarket to obtain any necessities.
Ponta itself is a quaint little village, consisting mostly of tourist accommodation of a wide variety, including two hotels and some lodges, as well holiday houses for rent.
