Introducing Stornoway Vacations

Many folk enjoy taking unusual vacations and increasing numbers of travelers are finding the usual seaside vacation boring. The need to find is forever increasing and travel agents are constantly searching for new and exciting vacation destinations or that feature something out of the ordinary. Below I introduce the town of Stornoway on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and discuss the reasons why this is a fantastic vacation destination.
The Isle of Lewis
Lewis, and the Isle of Harris, is the largest land mass in the Outer Hebrides. The islands is a fair distance from Scotland's west coast further out from the island of Skye, requiring a ferry journey or flight to get there. As a result of the incredible remoteness it was only since the middle to late 20th century that ordinary people have been able to access to the islands for a vacation, before then it was only those with enormous funds who could afford the trip. The only other option to get to the Western Isles was to arrive to seek employment.
Way back in the past the town of stornoway was an important fishing port. The main quarry of the fishing boats was herring and throughout the fishing season the population of Stornoway grew from approximately 6,000 to over thirty thousand. An astounding quantity of Stornoway Hotels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses were established to satisfy the lodging needs the incredible influx of temporary workers created. Nowadays Stornoway's population remains at just over six thousand (not including tourists).
Sadly the herring industry heavily declined following WWI with the utter collapse of the markets in Germany and Russia. The town of Stornoway retains a small fishing fleet but there are a few buildings remaining from that era and the town lost a great deal of its charm during the extensive redevelopment of the 1970's.
In recent years the Western Isles Council has enhanced, rather sympathetically, the town building a few works of modern sculpture focusing on the association with the herring industry as well as adding fountains and areas of flower beds. New buildings are also more sympathetic to the environment, for example the An Lanntair Arts centre.
Even though there are far fewer Stornoway hotels in existence, just the Royal Hotel dates back to the heyday of the Herring industry, there remains a massive number of Stornoway bed and breakfasts, plus inns, hostels and guest houses. You will even find a camping and caravan park on the outskirts of Stornoway.
