There are plenty of different styles of holiday homes in Kefallonia, which one can rent for your vacation. This is because it is one of the largest of all the Islands that make up Greece and the name itself when translated into English means "Island with a Head". Certainly if you were to go into space, you will see why it means what it does.
Of all the Islands that make up the Greek ones this is one of the most popular with tourists from around the world. Along with some of the most beautiful and unspoilt villages you are likely to see the Island of Kefallonia sports some of the most beautiful beaches as well.
Yet whilst staying on the island there is plenty of other things that one can do which can make your stay here even more fulfilling and exciting. Below we look at some of the other attractions that the Island has to offer and which will be worth a visiting during your time on it.
1. The Cave of Drogarati - This is now one of the oldest as well as one of the largest stalagmatic caves in the world. It is believed to be around 150 million years old and is well worth a visit just to be able to stand in the Concert Cave. This is a cave that is situated 150 feet below the earths surface and is renowned for have superb acoustic qualities.
2. Church of Saint Gerasimos - Located close to the village of Lassi this is yet another natural cave to be found on the island and is where Saint Gerassimos was believed to have stayed. He then moved to the Omala Valley and it was here that he chose to reorganize the monastery there, which is known as Agios Gerassimos.
3. The Kefallonia Archaeological Museum - This museum is located in the town of Argostoli and contains many artefacts and antiquities that have been discovered on the island. It covers the islands history from pre-historic times through to the period when the Romans were living on it.
4. The Agios Andreas Monastery - A very important building as it was part of the Katholikon Nunnery that had stood at the place until 1953. Unfortunately, there was a huge earthquake at this time and the only building that remained standing afterwards was the monastery.
Attached to the Monastery is a museum which has become even more important as in 1988 the sole of the right foot of the Apostle Andrew was brought to it and remains there to this day.
As you can see, there is plenty for one to do on this island and you do not need to spend all your time relaxing by the poolside at one of the many holiday homes in Kefallonia. What you may discover, however, is that you may need to return to the island several times in order to truly appreciate and enjoy what it has to offer.
