You might have had the desire to take a cruise knocking around for a few years and now you finally have reached the point where you have to book the trip. However, before you do, you should be aware of the many choices of top cruise lines available, so that you can make a more informed selection. A lot of decisions, big and small, will have to be made. These include deciding about the type of ship, the standard of cabin, the length of the voyage and finally, how you can make it fit your travel budget.
The major cruise lines pay a visit to approximately 1,800 ports all over the globe. But not all of these will be places that you will be interested in visiting. Because there are so many destinations available, you must first decide which hold the most interest for you. For instance, you can set your sights on taking a Caribbean or Mexican cruise if you are wanting warmth and sunshine, or if you want to combine scenery with whale watching investigate the Alaskan or Antarctic cruises. When you have narrowed down your search you will find it much easier to make your final decision.
Cruise companies usually offer a range of options depending on how long you want to be away. Some cruises are for just two nights, whilst others can last anything from one to two weeks. These are considered as shorter cruises and are well suited for people with busy lives.
There are also cruises available with longer itineraries. These are geared towards the people who are lucky enough to be able to afford to spend longer away from their home base. Such itineraries can span any length of time, but usually between three weeks and several months. Often these longer voyages provide you with opportunities to visit ports-of-call in a number of countries and sometimes in different continents.
Some of the cruise ships are so large that it is possible for a passenger to actually get lost. These ships are commonly referred to as megaliners and in fact, they are too large to navigate the Panama Canal. Cruisers of this type can accommodate up to 2,000 people and provide a multitude of activities to keep passengers, whatever their age, entertained. The mid-size liners are more common and usually have the facilities to carry 900 passengers, though they can still offer passengers a wide range of activities. The smaller ships are usually slightly more intimate and usually accommodate under 400 passengers.
You will also find a class of cruise ship called a boutique ship, which can be compared to a luxury boutique hotel. They are able to offer an exceptional service and usually have an extremely high standard of gourmet dishes available. This is saying something when you consider that these floating hotels are generally well-known for the quality of fine foods that are usually on offer.
You can get in-depth information about cruises that are of particular interest to you. Information about all the options available can be easily found online at one of the many travel websites. Many of these sites specialize in cruise travel information. Often you will find discounted cruise travel packages that will help you stretch that vacation budget of yours.
