The Dutch army used the yachts in olden times to chase off pirates. They were also used to carry the captain to the ships docked at sea. Today these fast moving agile water vessels are used for sports and recreational purposes.
The yachts may vary greatly in magnitude depending on their use and complexity and this sets their prices too. Their length starts from 4.5m and can go up to 100m. The larger yachts however may vary from 61m to over 150m.
The yachts were made in wood and steel in the olden days. Today they are being made of fibre glass and aluminium. The only yachts available in wood are the ones in the collector's homes.
Yachts can be classified in two categories: the sailing yachts and the motor yachts. The ones powered exclusively by sail are economical and eco-friendly as they are propelled by wind. There are the day sailing yachts, the weekender yachts, the cruising yachts, the racing yachts and the luxury yachts.
The day sailing yachts are small because they have no cabins and cannot be used for more than one or two hours. The weekender yachts are slightly bigger than day sailing because they have a small cabin and can be used to undertake a journey that can last 2 or 3 days. The cruising yachts are much bigger and therefore more complex, having many cabins below the deck.
The racing yachts are light and can attain a speed of 35 knots. They have a tall mast which increases their sail area. The luxury yachts on the other hand come with the convenience any boat can offer: from a TV to an air-conditioning system.
Motor Yachts run on diesel and have similar categories. The day cruiser yachts have no cabin whereas the weekend cruiser yacht may have more than one cabins. The cruising yachts have enough facilities to last for some days.
The other kind of motor yacht is the sport fishing yacht which comes with the entire fishing equipment one needs. Last but not the least the luxury yachts are more like cruising with many other facilities. The motor boats are expensive because they run on diesel.
