When it comes to anxiety disorders, panic attacks etc., I really have been there and done that as I was a sufferer for over 13 years.
Like most people who have suffered from any sort of disorder, I was continually looking for any solution which would help. Those people who fall into that category themselves will have total empathy with that feeling.
I discovered, over time, a principle I call "SO WHAT HAPPENS THEN?", which really worked for me. It's very simplicity may make people give it little credence, but I have to tell you, as someone who has worn the T-Shirt and starred in the film when it comes to anxiety issues, this really did work for me.
The idea here is to try and peel away the layers to see what really is the cause of the anxiety or panic.
This helped me to realise that the actual reason for the anxiety was baseless, which is the case with most sufferers.
There is an old saying, the source of which I cannot recall from memory, which explains the proven fact that if you cannot control the mind, then you can be out of control. Conversely, and this was my aim, if you control the mind then you control everything.
Let me take here, as an example, the possible panic attack one may have regarding being late for work, and I will keep this as simple as possible to try and explain.
So the dominant thought here is "I could be late for work", which then elicits the question "So what happens then?".
Answer. My boss may see me arrive late. Question. SO WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
Answer. He may sack me. Question. SO WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
Answer. My losing my job will mean that no money will be coming in each month. Question SO WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
Answer. We cannot pay the bills, get food on the table Question. SO WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
Let me stop this example here, as I think I will have already make my point. This gives you a simple method of finding out what is behind the probable attack and then actually proving to yourself just how irrational this is with no reason therefore for the panic.
In this instance the fear is of someone losing their job and what could then happen to the family, none of which is strange in today's economic climate. And all kicked off by the panic over being late for work.
This simple example shows the concept very well, and this can be applied to practically any situation which could induce, or has induced, a panic attack.
The key here is to prove to oneself just how irrational the anxiety can be. This is crucial, and in my own case I found it helped me immensely.
Anxiety disorders are truly awful, and those words need no further embellishment. Anything which works to dispel the feelings they create should be tried, and this does work.
I sought long and hard to find a solution, and then made a pact that when I did I would set a site up to help others do the same, and that is what I have done, with a lot of free information and detailed articles.
