So the new year is underway and it's time to review those resolutions. If you have a history of failing to stick with your resolutions, it could be because your goals are too far out of reach or unrealistic. You can make resolutions any time in the year, but you really need to focus on sticking with them.
This is my promise to myself. Okay, you have made your resolutions. Now, step back and take a look at each one. Are the resolutions you have made so far something you wanted, or something someone else wanted for you? First of all, you need to determine what you want for yourself. If you need to alter your resolution in any way, you should do it as soon as possible.
What are my goals? Are you envisioning reasonable resolutions, or are you reaching for the moon? Let's assume that you plan on losing 70 pounds in the year ahead. While the weight loss resolution is admirable, do you have the time to exercise regularly? Are you ready to eat differently? And what about changing your lifestyle to fuel such a radical change? Maybe 70 pounds are a bit much. Maybe you can give yourself additional time. Keep your health in mind. Keep in mind how your resolution may impact friends and family members...you may be a "bear" to live with over the next twelve months!
I have failed, so I quit. Do you quit at the first sign of failure? Are you ready to give up dieting if you splurge just once? Why not try again? All you have to do is to get up and start walking again. The path to success is not one without traps. You might be more successful at sticking with your resolution if you have someone else to work with.
Reward Yourself. Once you've made it for one year, make sure you reward yourself. If you've managed to lose the weight, take a vacation! If instead you've missed the goal, keep the idea of the reward in mind. In other words, some resolutions are ongoing and shouldn't be restricted by a 365 day calendar.
See resolutions as something you should welcome, not loathe. The way you feel about a certain resolution should let you know how ready you are to embark on the journey. Any resolution made which doesn't have your enthusiastic backing will certainly become a hindrance come February or March and forgotten altogether by April. Focus on important resolutions and stick with them!
