Vehicle crime is a huge problem all around the world. In the US alone, over 1 million vehicles were stolen in 2008, costing victims $2.6billion and this problem is mirrored all over Europe. All sorts of vehicles are stolen every day, yet vans are often considered hot pickings because they often hold valuable goods in the storage area. There are several thing s that van owners should be doing to reduce the risk of thieves from striking.
It sounds obvious, but you should always ensure that your doors and windows are locked whenever the van is unattended. Unfortunately it happens all too often; van owners think they'll be ok to leave their vehicle unattended and unlocked just for a couple of minutes for whatever reason. During this time, a thief has the perfect opportunity to strike and all too often they do. As well as making sure that doors are locked, make sure that windows are fully closed.
Another basic tip is to ensure that no valuables are left on show to anyone that passes the vehicle. If a thief spots something of value, they'll often do anything to get at it. If you have to leave goods, make sure they are out of view. Use the glove compartment or keep items under the seats. The best advice would be to take anything of value with you.
Avoid leaving your vehicle unattended for long periods. If you leave your van unattended for weeks on end, this could attract unwanted attention from thieves. If they think that a theft will go unnoticed for a while, they will be more likely to strike. Sometime, if you're on holiday for example, you can't avoid leaving your car for long periods. If possible, leave the car somewhere secure or ask a friend to move it regularly.
One grave error that too many people take is to leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running. This gives thieves the opportunity to take the vehicle with the minimum of effort. When it's cold weather it might be tempting to leave the engine running whilst it heats up. If you do have to do this, stay with your car at all times and don't give opportunistic thieves the opportunity they've been waiting for.
