The word wed in Greek meant to take a pledge. This pledge is all about taking an oath that two partners i.e. the husband and the wife are going to take care of each other at all times no matter what the circumstances and start a family unit that is legal and socially acceptable to the community they are living in. Different cultures on the planet earth have different ways to herald to the world that this union is taking place and in almost all the cases this is announced with festivities and celebration.
Zaffa is held in Egypt which is basically a musical march. It contains a troop of musicians and dancers which entertain the guests before the wedding ceremony. In Morocco milk bath is taken by the bride that ensures her purification.
Traditional South African ceremonies revolve around the twelve symbols of the wedding which strengthen the two families the two families with love. These symbols are wheat, pepper and salt, some herbs, water, a pot and spoon, a broom, honey, a spear, a shield, and a copy of the Holy text. To start off the wedding celebrations the bride's and groom's parents carry a fire from their hearths to the home of the new couple, where a new fire is lit.
In a Sudanese ceremony the bride and groom are to be seated in front of the entrance to their new house. They ask forgiveness from both sets of parents near a gargoyle fountain which symbolizes the ever flowing parent's love for their children and the fact the parents would continue to support them in whichever way possible. The couple is showered with different things like rice, candy, and coins.
Caribbean weddings are very special too. They have a curried goat and spicy jet chicken in the wedding feast. They also have a black cake baked from a secret recipe for the occasion.
The Oriental weddings are much elaborated too. The menu of the Chinese wedding reception consists of a nine-course meal that can last up to three or more hours. The bride wears a red dress that has patterns of golden phoenixes, chrysanthemums and peonies that symbolize love, wealth and brings good luck.
After nine sips of sake are taken by the couple the Japanese wedding is legalised. In Indonesia over a thousand guests can be invited. And superstitious Koreans invite a fortune teller to foretell the couple's future.
These are some of the ceremonies from around the world that begin a couple's journey in to a new life. The symbols and ceremonies might go from being weird to totally obnoxious though the food might be the very best. But their purpose is to celebrate a new relationship between two souls and propel them into the future with good luck and loads of blessings.
