Monograms are a relatively simple thing that can go on any number of items. Essentially, you want to have your initials and your partners' initials, with some sort of symbol combining them. You can write them out in flowing script with an ampersand, or you can have them in more modern type with a plus sign. How you choose to present your monograms is going to be dependent on the rest of your wedding dcor and theme, though classical monograms never seem to look bad- even in the most contemporary of wedding arrangements.
A few more bits of housekeeping before moving on. It's traditional for the Bride's initials to go first, and for the Groom's initials to follow. This is not necessary, and you may choose to consciously do the opposite, but it is the traditional way and something to take into consideration. If the Bride is going to take her husbands name, then traditionally her half of the monogram should follow this formula: her first initial, the last initial they share, then his first initial. If she is going to keep her name, then you can use all four initials in the monogram.
Finally, some people consider it inappropriate to use the combined monogram before you are actually married. If you are sensitive to this, then make sure that you only begin to use the shared monogram from the reception onward.
Once you've figured out all the little details about how you're going to display your monogram, it's time to decide where exactly you are going to feature it. While you can be conservative and only post it on a couple of different places, you can also go all out if you want. After all, it's your special day! If you want to plaster your monogram on the wedding guest pillow and wedding pen, then put them on there!
Some of the more common places to put a monogram are on your save the dates and invitations; on your bouquet ribbons, on your bridal garter; on your handkerchief; on the tablecloths and napkins; on the place cards; on the coasters; on the centerpieces; on the cake; on all loose drapes and decorations, and on the wedding favor boxes or bags.
While you might initially feel like you're being a little tacky stamping your shared initials on everything that can hold one, it's really nothing to be embarrassed about. Not only is it expected, but it's encouraged. After all, it's your special day, and everything is set up to be about the two of you. Your monogram is like your special personal brand for the day. And if McDonalds can throw those arches all over the world just to sell a few hamburgers, than you can display your little brand on the one day devoted entirely to the two of you.
