Most failed relationships can be avoided if people would take the time to clearly define what they are looking for in a relationship early on. Both people in a relationship come with different expectations and ideas of what they are looking for in a relationship.
The reason why so many people find themselves in failing relationships is because they take the spectator approach to their lives. Most people have a hard time communicating and it is often uncomfortable and awkward at the beginning of a relationship.
For most relationships, the ability to spend time enjoying each others company makes up a huge percentage of what the relationship is about. While this can provide a certain degree of excitement it can also overshadow the need for meaningful communication.
As long as things seem to be going okay people usually think that there is no need to talk about expectations and hopes for the relationship. People only attempt to have these types of discussions when something has gone wrong,
Establishing a relationship with someone who has the same ideas about what a relationship should be is important. It is best to share ideas for the relationship at the beginning or as an on going dialogue and not only when something seems wrong.
It can be very devastating to suddenly find out that your dreams of marriage, a family and a home with a white picket fence is not the same as your partners dream to travel the world and live off of the land.
As awkward as it may be it is very important to define the relationship early on. You will be able to see where you are and where the relationship is headed. This will allow you to determine if this is what you want and if you should continue the relationship.
Defining your relationship is like setting up a road map that both partners will use as a guide to build and maintain the relationship. In setting up this road map each partner will contribute based on their hopes and desires for the relationship. It will serve as the basis for the relationship and decrease the chance for failure since it was created with both partner's input.
Defining the relationship early should be embraced as prerequisite to avoid getting involved in a relationship that otherwise would not be sustainable. Talking about each partners expectations reveals a window into the other person's soul. If this happens early on it is much easier determine if one should invest time or move on. If the decision is made to move on it is more acceptable to all involved rather than later on.
Relationships fail for many reasons. Expressing your feelings and expectations can help to create a successful relationship.
