How to Ward off Rose Bowl Ticket Scams
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
With the upcoming Rose Bowl only a month away, many fans will be making the trip to Pasadena for the first time. In all the excitement surrounding the game, most fans are willing to spend top dollar to experience the "Granddaddy of Them All." However, buyers beware - ticket scammers are lurking everywhere to capitalize on eager Rose Bowl fans. News surrounding the popularity of ticket scams has grown exponentially over the past several years. As time has passed, scammers have become more resourceful than ever, making it quite difficult to determine when tickets are legitimate.
The two most commonly used websites for purchasing Rose Bowl tickets are Craigslist and eBay. Both offer easy transaction options and provide buyers with the opportunity to purchase tickets to sold out sporting events such as the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, these sites also serve as a breeding ground for scams and counterfeit tickets. When using these sites to purchase Rose Bowl tickets, be smart and take precautions. Here are a few things you can do to help avoid ticket scams:
1. Try to deal with local people who are willing to meet face-to-face. In-person transactions help eliminate a lot of the concern, especially when you can see the actual tickets.
2. NEVER wire money to an unknown person's account. Most scammers will request payment via Western Union or another wiring service. Any seller requesting a wire transfer should be taken as a huge red flag. These scammers are probably the most common, but also the easiest to avoid.
3. If you're using eBay to purchase Rose Bowl tickets, check the seller's feedback. This is a great way to see what other user's have to say about the seller's performance. If you are using another purchasing method, look for testimonials or referrals. It's very unlikely that an illegitimate seller will have any positive feedback available.
4. Request an image of the actual Rose Bowl tickets. Many scammers may claim to have the tickets in hand, but this may not be true. An image of the tickets, which matches the sections & rows they are advertising, will help confirm their authenticity.
5. Use a credit card to make the purchase. If it does turn out to be a scam or the tickets are counterfeit, the charges can be disputed.
6. Contact the seller with any question you may have. If the seller is unwilling to answer your questions then you should steer clear because they likely have something to hide.
7. Purchase all-inclusive ticket packages from reputable sports travel agencies. Most sports travel companies offer all-inclusive packages to premium sporting events that include airfare, accommodations, and game tickets. Purchasing Rose Bowl packages makes booking travel arrangements a breeze. In addition, they are a great way to get the most out of your Rose Bowl experience.
8. Most importantly, use some common sense! If Rose Bowl tickets are selling for $300 everywhere else and someone is selling one for $100, then it is most likely a scam. Always remember, if a deal looks too good to be true it probably is.
The Rose Bowl is one of the most highly anticipated sporting events of the year. If you're fortunate enough to attend, make sure to enjoy the experience as much as possible. That being said, purchasing fake or counterfeit tickets is sure to throw a wrench into your time in Pasadena. Remember, exercise caution, be wary of suspicious sellers, and always use common sense!
