December, 2012 - Is The World Ending?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The year 2012. Is this the last year on earth? What's going to happen? There's plenty of speculation! All cultures in history have always had a thirst for impending doom. You read it in the history books and you see it on film. It's coming! Most recently it was the charismatic California preacher Harold Camping, who had predicted the return of Jesus Christ to Earth. He and his extremely devout followers had been campaigning for months that on May 21, 2011 a select portion of the world's population would be taken to heaven. Those poor souls left behind would face months of tribulation before perishing in the Earth's destruction, which Camping said would happen on October 21. They spent countless money and time getting the message out.
That day came and went with no JC.
In the early 1900's, the Jehovah's Witnesses (Watchtower Bible and Tract Society) predicted that the war of Armageddon would start in 1914. They had come to this prediction from reading into the book of Daniel. They took a phrase referring to "seven times", which they interpreted to mean one year. They came up with some crazy math to put the start of the war at 1914. When the year came and went without the chaos they were sure to happen, they quickly changed their prediction to mean that 1914 was the year that Jesus invisibly began his rule. And the perish actually still listen to this man after all of this. Crazy.
It seems that everyone jumps on board when it comes to the end of the world. The Mayans, Aztecs, Nostradamus and even modern day Astronomers have all had their say of when the world will end.
Y2K - Now that was a problem. The standard of using 2-digit dates for convenience predates computers, but was never a problem until the dates were used in calculations. When software programmers started writing programs sometime in 1980's, the year 2000 wasn't on their minds. Let other people worry about that. The scare that came from Y2K was real. Were the Governments just going to shut down? Would banks be able to operate efficiently? The world survived and moved on to another crisis.
So for now, at this moment, 2012 IS THE YEAR! The excitement building up to this date will be tremendous. Hollywood has begun their campaign of World Ending movies. The Discovery Channel has plenty of shows dealing with the topic. Merchandise is everywhere. But why do we all get so caught up with it all? It's because people just don't know what's going to happen. It seems like everything is pointing to this date. And that's what makes it all so exciting! So jump on board. Buy a 2012 shirt. Go see the 2012 movies. Not because you actually believe the world is going to end. Just because it's so much fun! (And you can make fun of all the people that really do think it's ending.)
